About Us
The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (Sigma), was founded in 1922 at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses, now known as the Indiana University School of Nursing in the United States. The name “Sigma Theta Tau” is derived from the initials of the Greek words Storgé, Tharsos, and Timé, representing love, courage, and honor.
The Pi Iota Chapter (PIC) of Sigma, established on 18 March 2000 at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was the first and only Sigma chapter in Hong Kong at that time. After 21 years, the Pi Iota At-large Chapter (PIAC) was formed on 2 October 2021 through the collaboration of five local institutions with schools of nursing: Hong Kong Baptist University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The University of Hong Kong, and Tung Wah College. In 2026, Hong Kong Metropolitan University joined PIAC, further strengthening the collaborative network of nursing institutions in Hong Kong.
